Below is a guide to the type of contact lenses available, their purposes and what we at David Kear Opticians can offer the existing or new wearer.

Contact lenses are a 'medical devise' and must be fitted by a qualified fitter. Our initial examination will determine the eye's prescription and health before the appropiate contact lens options are discussed. As there are many different types of contact lenses we want to be sure that the lenses selected will best suit your requirements.

Being an intependent group of practices we have the freedom to use any lens type available without any restrictions to certain manufacturers.

Soft Lenses

Within the soft lens category there are several lens types.

Daily disposable – each lens is used for one day and then thrown away. The benefit here is that the inserted lens is always clean and free from surface deposits, thus maintaining comfort without the need for contact lens solutions.

Monthly disposable – these lenses are replaced once a month. At the end of each days wear the lenses are removed, cleaned and stored in a specific contact lens solution.

Standard replacement – a single pair of lenses are supplied with the aim that they will be usable for a twelve-month period before replacement is necessary. Once again specific contact lens solutions are required to maintain comfort and hygiene.

Bifocal lenses – if you require different spectacle prescription for distance and near vision bifocal contact lenses may be necessary. This type of lens is most often supplied as a monthly disposable type.

Cosmetic lenses – can be standard replacement or monthly disposable and are used to change or highlight the colour of an eye.

Rigid Lenses

Rigid gas permeable lenses can initially be less comfortable than soft lenses however, they sometimes produce better visual results if a prescription is a little complicated and comfort comes with just a little perseverance.

Bifocal lenses are also possible when using a gas permeable design.

Aftercare

Most minor contact lens problems are asymptomatic so it is important that the health of the eyes is monitored at regular intervals. Regular check-ups help to maintain successful contact lens wear. It is recommended that all contact lens wearers have a check-up at least annually to maintain the optimum contact lens for their requirements.

If you are interested in the possibilities of contact lens wear please contact one of our practices. We are ready to answer questions and arrange a suitable appointment.
