Our Equipment
We continue to invest in technologies that we believe enhance the ability of the optometrist to better evaluate the health and performance of the eye.
Our current portfolio of equipment include the following:

Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an incredible technology that allows us to produce a computer generated image of the underlying layers of the eye. Never before seen elements of the eye's structure can be examined in tremendous detail. We recommend this instrument is used with the following patients:
This service is based in our Lydney branch, but is avilable to all patients. There is a charge for all patients who undergo OCT scanning.

All branches of David Kear Opticians have camera equipment designed to photograph the retina. The detail of any retinal abnormality found during a sight test, can be enhanced by retinal photography. Should referral to an Ophthalmologist be necessary, it is advantageous to record the retinal appearance at the time of the original finding. Retinal photography is available to all patients, but is not covered by the NHS sight test fee.

Visual field tests are performed to analyse the integrity of the nervous tissue between the eye and brain. There are a number of conditions which have characteristic visual field defects, e.g. Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Retinal Detachment, etc. We are also registered with the DVLA to perform driver's visual field screening.

Colorimetry assessments can be beneficial to those suffering from some causes of visual stress when reading, e.g. Dyslexia, Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, Irlem Syndrome, but has also been known to ease some causes of migraine. We often assess reading difficulties with coloured overlays, but have the ability to further examine the hue and saturation of a helpful colour by means of the Intuitive Colorimeter.
